Sometimes after a run, the best way to fill up quickly cooking is a smoothie. First thing I have after a jog in the morning is a nice filling smoothie, then after about 45mins to an hour I'll follow up with some porridge or cereal to start my day. I call smoothies the 'cheating' way of life and because since no one will say it, I will... EATING HEALTHY IS HARD! They won't tell you this on those natural health shows or on those food blogs...
Yes they say have five portions of fruit a day and blah blah blah. Well sometimes I don't feel like having an orange as a snack, or some dried fruit to keep me going. No. Sometimes I want me some sweets, some tongue fizzlers, some Haribos Tangfantastics, Jelly Babies, some chocolate eclairs and all those things they say will make my teeth turn black as night. Which is why I'm in love with smoothies. They taste good and they're good for you.
They're quick and easy and you can pretty much do whatever you like and it won't mess up... Too much. And since no one will say this either, I will. Smoothies can get expensive. Healthy living can get expensive, period. However I'm much more careful now when it comes to my shopping. I've had to substitute My Randoms Rowntrees for Bananas, my croissants for oranges, and my gingerbread cookies for berries, but here's the amazing part - I don't even miss those foods! Sure once in a long while I'll treat myself to those things but they're not a standard part of my shopping list anymore. I've been at this for about two months and I can't say I've lost any weight or feel any better, but it's a progress and I'm willing to go forward because I really like the taste of them... Yeah they're nutritional and good for you and blah di blah, but they just taste really amazing! Which is why I'm so in love with them. These are the ingredients I reach for when I've got 5 minutes to get out the door. Nothing too fancy - Let me know if you try it out!
I poured the Almond milk into the blender first, followed by the bananas, kale, nuts and finally all the watery fruits (watermelon, grapes). I always add my sweeteners last, Sweeteners may include honey, brown sugar, sometimes a bit of cinnamon too, for a different taste. But I find that I very rarely need additional sweeteners, as the Almond milk pretty much always does the job.
And there you have it! I hope you enjoy this little tutorial and let me know if you have any suggestions for any more delicious recipes. I get weird looks all the time about the colour of my smoothies, but I pay them no mind. They don't know what they are missing out on ;)
