I don't draw "real" people very often, actually this one of Martin is my first one. I find the idea of drawing something that exists outside of my mind inexplicably boring. Of course I'm not negating that the monsters I usually draw are inspired by someone or something, but instead I intend for my characters to exude a certain energy or attitude. I went back to Amsterdam just this December gone and again at the start of February. I saw loads of friends and one that I'm always excited to see is Martin. We met around 4 years ago, when I had just started my Graphic Design BA. He's such a badass designer and his work and studio always leave me drooling and excited for the future. So seeing as I loved his design work, I sent him an email asking if I could visit him at his studio for a quick tea or something. He said yes and from that studio visit, we've been super friends ever since. Martin has a superb face, his features are really fun to draw. On top of that he's got an energy and a quirkiness that holds attention and to me scream orange hues and teal hues. For all these reasons, I assumed it to be fitting for Martin to be my very first portrait of a "real" person, or a caricature, if you will. I have to stress though, that, I draw people based on how I perceive them in my head, accuracy is therefore out the window. I saw Him as a puppet character, so I drew him as such. I'm happy to report that he was pleased with his little monster!
